Es un acercamiento desde lo humano, la cotidianidad de su existencia, de sus luchas, desde la melancolía o el recuento del pasado, de las aspiraciones a futuro, los planteamientos políticos, dilemas y dudas. En el escrito se teje un contraste de muchas capas y tejidos, de Pérez como comandante, ideólogo, político, soñador, cura, padre, pareja. La autora narra a partir de múltiples entrevistas y, encuentros con el cura español Manuel Pérez y personas cercanas, en las selvas colombianas; así como una amplia documentación.

En el libro también se huele el café, se escucha el canto de las aves, se percibe la tensión del constante sentimiento de alerta, la esperanza y los dolores. Con un relato casi etnográfico y su particular pluma literaria, Fabiola Calvo Ocampo nos lleva a territorios poco accesibles, escondidos en las montañas y desde allí nos narra el día a día de un campamento, las historias de quienes lo habitan, pero también el complejo tejido histórico, social y político que lo circunda.
